Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update on this Tuesday, the eighth day of May, 2007. Six men are in custody after being accused of plotting an attack against an Army post in New Jersey. The men were reportedly planning to shoot soldiers at Fort Dix using automatic weapons. Federal authorities say the group's goal was to kill as many soldiers as possible. All six of the men are from the former Yugoslavia. Five of them lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.Leaders of the U.S. Congress say they want to see progress in the Iraq war from President Bush by September. A new fiscal begins October first, and Congress will likely consider placing new conditions on funding the war if there's no progress by that point. The commander of the U.S. troops there, General David Petraeus, says he should know by September whether the security operation is aiding the country. Israel's military wants to step up its targeted assassination campaign as part of a plan to deter Palestinian rocket attacks. There's been a recent increase in the number of rockets launched into Israel. But Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has only partially approved the military's plan. He's authorized a small expansion of the Gaza Strip area where the military can operate. He also announced that he would meet with his Security Cabinet next week to assess the situation. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is postponing a planned trip to Israel because of the political unrest there. Rice had planned to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders next week to discuss U.S.-recommended benchmarks for peace talks. A State Department spokesman says the change in plans doesn't lessen the focus on the issue and the determination to help the two parties move the process forward. That's all for now. Check out our new special segment called 'Police Posers,' a story that may surprise you about easy it can be to impersonate a police officer. You can find that story on upi.com's video update page.
