'Mamma Mia' (Italian: My mother) literal translation is My God! Thanks to all the people who sent me the correct interpretation, is a song from ABBA's third album, ABBA, and was written by Stig Anderson, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus[1], with the lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The B-side of the single was the instrumental 'Intermezzo No. 1', composed by Benny Andersson. It was first released on the ABBA album in April 1975.High listener interest saw the single released in the winter of 1975-76, first in Sweden and then the United Kingdom, where the single rose to the top of the charts. It was released in the United States in January 1976 and took twenty weeks to rise up the Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at #32.Already popular for years in their native Sweden, 'Mamma Mia' was one of the first songs to make a breakthrough in the United Kingdom. It took the single nearly two months after it was released to top the UK charts (and stayed there for two weeks - ABBA's second UK chart topper) for a number of weeks, ABBA held at number two behind Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Interestingly, this number-one single that preceded 'Mamma Mia' also contained the words 'Mamma Mia' in the lyrics. The United States' reception of the single, however, was lukewarm. In Canada, the single was not released, a rarity for the group. The single also topped the charts in Australia, where ABBA were unaccountably huge. At the time, it was rumoured that a third of the country owned an ABBA record. 'Mamma Mia' also topped the charts in Ireland, Switzerland, and West Germany. It stopped at number two in New Zealand and in Norway and Belgium, while hitting number three in Belgium and number five in South Africa. The single's popularity was boosted by a promotional music video, in which one of the singers' faces were shown in profile opposite the others' faces.
