Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline on this Friday, October 12, 2007.Former Vice-President Al Gore is the proud recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was honored today for his work to raise awareness about global warming. Gore says he's deeply honored and added that the climate crisis is not a political issue, but a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. He received one and a half million dollars, half of which he says he's donating to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a U.S. organization he founded.Russian President Vladimir Putin is warning U.S. officials to back off on a plan to install military defenses in Eastern Europe or risk harming relations with Moscow. The Russian government sees the U.S. missile defense plan as a step toward weakening Russian security. Washington describes it as a way to circumvent the threat of a missile attack from Iran. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was with Putin when he made those comments, says they'll find ways to cooperate.Turkey is warning of serious repercussions if Congress labels the killings of Armenians by Turks during World War One as genocide. Yesterday, the country recalled its ambassador to Washington. A Turkish government official says it may have to cut logistical support to the U.S. The country is a conduit for many of the supplies shipped to American bases in both Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. drugstores are clearing their shelves of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for infants. Leading manufacturers announced yesterday they were withdrawing the products amid concerns about their safety. The medications can reportedly cause severe hallucinations, seizures, high blood pressure, and heart and breathing problems that can be fatal. The companies who manufacture the products say they acted because of the risk of their complications when misused. Critics say they hazardous even when used at the usual doses.
