All happy and pleased with our
success with 10%, tree
hugging, Olive oil, two stroke
lubricant, we decided to test
our gold standard. This was a
run with only 10%, Klotz
Benol, castor oil, two stroke
lubricant. The bottle says
it's for gasoline and methanol
fuelled engines. They include
the snowmachine and dirt bike
dudes along with those of use
running these itty, bitty
little toy airplane engines.
OK, Klotz, if you're so smart,
how do you explain THIS. On
20% Klotz and 80% kerosene,
this little Norvel, dieselized
.15 is quite happy. Even with
no Cetane Booster it WILL run
albeit it a little gnarly with
some high compression
required. The CB allows for
lower compression and the run
gets as smooth as that fake
silk,,, rayon, nylon,
whatever.But, at 10% and even
WITH a little Cetane Booster,
we have something go real bad.
This was a surprise and no
matter what we did, we had
trouble. Even hot from
multiple prime runs, we STILL
needed prime to get fire. On
the OliveLUBE mix, even at 10%
we always got a hot start
without the need for prime.
Occasionally, the 10% Klotz
mix would fire off and give us
a short run. Sometimes it
would just quit. Sometimes it
would sag from 9.5K to 6K and
stay there for a few minutes
and then quit. I really WAS
waiting for something to blow
UP. It never did but maybe
there was something half broke
inside that was doing this.
So, I fired up on the 10%
OliveLUBE and got a nice,
normal run. Nope, no WMDs
here, so I went and did a
Klotz attempt again. Uh uh,,,
no sir, no go. So I went back
to OliveLUBE. Just fine. This
was repeated three times for
both mixes for a total of six.
All the same result. The Klotz
mix needed a full turn richer
on the needle but the
compression was about the same
for both. Both needed slightly
higher compression for a
start. Could it be that OLIVE
OIL is a superior lubricant,
in SOME cases compared to
Castor oil?One afternoon on
one engine doesn't prove
anything except that we have
some tantalizing possibilities
for further
experimentation.Addendum:Very
important to note is that the
runs on OliveLUBE were not
just the short clips shown
here. This series took a full
afternoon, some five hours in
all. Many times, the two ounce
tank was only 1/3rd down when
a test or clip was taken. On
all of the mixes except, of
course, the castor, I let the
engine run out the tank. How
long? don't know but many
times I let it sing while I
posted a clip to this amazing
website and waited till the
download was complete. Twice I
made a hot chocolate to ward
off the chill and while
looking out the window, I was
satisfied that my new muffler
system WAS muffling the sound
as observed from inside the
house. My neighbours were
likely pleased
too.Addendum:Got a little
ahead of myself condemning
castor for these poor runs.
Well, it was cold and we know
that at cold temps, the castor
settles out of kerosene. This
happens when you don't have
any ether in the mix. A good
castor like Klotz Benol has
the capacity of staying
blended without ether but only
at reasonable temperatures.
Reasonable as in above 40 or
50F. What fooled me was the
apparent good mix indicated by
the healthy pink glow of fuel
in the tank. Looked good,
maybe wasn't. This one is
going to be repeated in warmer
weather. Not likely soon
though, winter is here.
